The new photovoltaic array on the roof of Production Building C went into operation in May. It covers an area of roughly 1000 square metres and produces around 85,500 kilowatt-hours of electricity per annum.
"This is enough to supply approximately 25 four-person households with electricity for a whole year," says DESMA Technical Managing Director Christian Decker. The energy goes straight into the production process where it helps to reduce carbon emissions and minimise the company's carbon footprint. "Our aim is to introduce further targeted measures to become an even more sustainable business in this region," confirms Klaus Freese, DESMA Managing Director.
The company has already taken its first major steps along the road to more sustainability: in 2020, for instance, it moved into the "Factory of the Future". This not only increased efficiency and productivity, but also reduced heating costs by 50 per cent. Moreover, DESMA's new particle dosing technology enables the use of production waste and recycled materials or other fillers, thus reducing the consumption of raw materials so that footwear production on DESMA machinery can be designed more sustainably.
